Dry Dock Welder / Shipyard Welder
Job Summary
A Dry Dock Welder performs welding, fabrication, repair, and maintenance of ship structures, piping systems, tanks, and marine equipment while vessels are in dry dock for repair, maintenance, or construction. The role requires working with various welding processes and ensuring compliance with marine industry safety and quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform welding on ship hulls, decks, bulkheads, piping, tanks, and structural components.
- Read and interpret welding drawings, blueprints, and work instructions.
- Prepare materials for welding by cutting, grinding, beveling, and fitting.
- Carry out welding using processes such as SMAW (Arc Welding), FCAW, GMAW (MIG), and GTAW (TIG), as required.
- Repair cracks, corrosion damage, and structural defects on vessels and marine equipment.
- Conduct weld inspections and ensure weld quality meets project specifications.
- Operate welding equipment, gas cutting equipment, and power tools safely.
- Work in confined spaces, at heights, and in various weather conditions when required.
- Follow safety procedures, hot work permits, and environmental regulations.
- Coordinate with fitters, inspectors, supervisors, and other shipyard personnel.
Required Skills
- Proficiency in marine or structural welding techniques.
- Ability to read welding symbols and technical drawings.
- Knowledge of different metals, electrodes, and welding consumables.
- Experience with grinding, cutting, and fabrication tools.
- Understanding of welding quality standards and inspection requirements.
- Strong attention to safety and workmanship.
- Experience in shipyards, dry docks, offshore projects, or heavy fabrication industries is advantageous.
Working Conditions
- Work performed in shipyards, dry docks, workshops, and onboard vessels.
- Exposure to heat, fumes, noise, confined spaces, and outdoor environments.
- May require shift work, overtime, and physically demanding activities.
