Tag Welder (Tack Welder)

Job Summary

A Tag Welder (commonly called a Tack Welder) is responsible for temporarily joining metal components using tack welds before final welding. The role ensures proper alignment, fit-up, and positioning of structural parts, pipes, plates, and assemblies according to engineering drawings and specifications.

Key Responsibilities

• Read and interpret fabrication drawings, welding symbols, and work instructions.
• Align, position, and secure metal parts before final welding.
• Perform tack welding to hold components in place during fabrication and assembly.
• Check dimensions, alignment, and fit-up using measuring tools.
• Assist welders and fitters during fabrication and erection activities.
• Prepare materials by grinding, cleaning, and beveling edges as required.
• Inspect tack welds for quality and stability before final welding.
• Operate welding machines, hand tools, and power tools safely.
• Follow workplace safety procedures and quality standards.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Required Skills

• Basic knowledge of SMAW, MIG, or TIG welding processes.
• Ability to read fabrication drawings and welding symbols.
• Good understanding of metal fabrication and fit-up techniques.
• Familiarity with measuring instruments such as tape measures, squares, and calipers.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Experience in fabrication, shipbuilding, construction, or heavy engineering is preferred.
• Basic welding qualification may be required depending on employer standards.
