Job Summary
A Dry Dock Blaster Painter is responsible for surface preparation and protective coating application on ships, offshore structures, and marine equipment during dry docking operations. The role involves abrasive blasting to remove rust, old paint, and contaminants, followed by the application of marine-grade coatings to protect against corrosion and environmental damage.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform abrasive blasting (sand, grit, garnet, or steel shot blasting) to clean and prepare surfaces.
- Remove rust, scale, marine growth, old coatings, and contaminants from ship hulls and structures.
- Prepare surfaces according to specified cleanliness and profile standards.
- Apply primers, epoxy coatings, anti-corrosive paints, and finishing coats using spray, roller, or brush methods.
- Mix paints and coatings according to manufacturer specifications.
- Measure and monitor coating thickness using inspection instruments.
- Protect adjacent equipment and areas from blasting and painting operations.
- Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with quality standards.
- Maintain blasting and painting equipment in good working condition.
- Follow safety procedures related to confined spaces, working at heights, hazardous materials, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Required Skills
- Knowledge of abrasive blasting techniques and coating applications.
- Understanding of marine coating systems and corrosion protection.
- Ability to use spray painting equipment, blasting machines, and inspection tools.
- Familiarity with surface preparation standards (e.g., Sa 2.5, Sa 3).
- Knowledge of workplace health, safety, and environmental regulations.
